Following we will try to give small definitions to the details of the turbocharger and formulate brief descriptions of all the main turbocharger parts.

Turbocharger Cartridge (CHRA) is its core, consisting of a bearing housing, a rotor (shaft with a turbine wheel), an wheel of a turbocharger compressor, a thermal reflector and a compressor cover (back plate). Also the cartridge includes repair kit parts, such as: thrust and radial slide bearings, turbine and compressor sealing rings. The cartridges are shipped fully assembled from the parts listed above. After the final assembly, the cartridges are provided with the balancing of the rotor in real working conditions, which are simulated with special equipment. The cartridge is placed in a balancing stand, where a pressurized motor oil is supplied inside of the cartridge. The flow capacity of the oil flow is calculated and presence of leakage is observed. At the same time, a strong air flow is supplied to the compressor wheel, causing the rotor and wheels to rotate up to 200,000 rpm. When the rotor rotates, the computer analyzes its vibration level. Balancing, elimination of vibrations is performed by shifting the center of mass toward the center of the axis of rotation. In other words: the surplus metal that causes vibration is removed from the shaft with wheels (rotor) of the cartridge by grinding or cutting.

The actuator of a turbocharger (aka "turbine valve") refers to a device that drives the blades (nozzles, blades, etc.) of the control ring by changing the geometry of the exhaust gas flow in turbos with VNT technology or a device that moves the bypass valve in the turbochargers with the "wastegate" technology. The turbocharger actuator itself is controlled by the engine management system. Membrane vacuum actuators are often equipped with electronic sensors, which altogether represent a sophisticated turbocharger control system associated with the engine management system. Vacuum actuators are controlled by the vacuum, created by the control system, in contrast to pneumatic actuators controlled by the system pressure. Servo drives or electronic (electric) actuators are controlled by the electrical signal from the turbocharger control system. The servo mechanism itself is driven by an electric motor inside the electronic actuator. Electronic drives are often controlled by an integrated electrical circuit and operate according to a specified program. The development and introduction of electronics to the automotive industry has led to the emergence of programmable and programmable drives (actuators). There are combined turbocharger control systems consisting of a vacuum drive with position sensors, pressure sensors and electric or electronic servo. Such systems are often applicable in twin turbochargers (Twin Turbo) operating in the same segment. A Shaft and Wheel is a rotor part or a shaft with a turbine wheel. The shaft with the turbine working wheel is not supplied separately. When operating, the turbine wheel receives a very hot flow of exhaust gas. The shaft with the turbine wheel is made of heat-resistant materials capable of withstanding temperatures above 1000 degrees Celsius, without deformation caused by severe heating. In the production process, the wheel (turbine wheel) of the turbine is created by the method of casting (by smelting), and the connection of the turbine wheel to the shaft is carried out by the diffusion method. Simply put: they are firmly welded to each other. In disassembled form, the shaft and wheel of the turbine, separately from the compressor wheel, is sometimes called the rotor, which is not entirely correct, since the rotor is the entire rotating part (shaft, turbine wheel and compressor wheel).

The Wheel of the compressor is located on the shaft of the turbocharger in the cold part of the body. Unlike the wheel of the turbine, the compressor wheel is not subjected to ultrahigh temperatures. The compressor wheel is used for injection, coming from the air filter of the air flow into the cylinders of the engine. Structurally, the compressor wheel is preferably made of aluminum or titanium alloys, by melting or milling. Rotating the compressor wheel forces the kinetic force transmitted along the shaft. The gas flow, acting on the turbine wheel, rotates the turbocharger shaft, which rotates the compressor wheel located on its back side. The shaft and wheel (turbine wheel) and turbocharger compressor wheel, together assembled, constitute a full rotor.

VNT Nozzle Ring - Turbocharger Geometry

VNT (Variable-Nozzle Turbine) - a turbocharger with an exhaust gas flow change system or a turbocharger with variable geometry of the exhaust gas flow.

The Variable-Nozzle device or Nozzle Ring - is the control unit for the geometry of the exhaust gas flow, which consists of a ring and moving aerodynamic blades on it. The blades are located along the circumference of the ring, and inside the ring there is a rotating turbine wheel. Thus, the VNT Nozzle Ring, by changing the angle of the blade position, opens or closes the path of the gas flow directed towards the turbine wheel. The VNT mechanism is a part of turbines with variable geometry of the exhaust gas flow. The motion of the blades (blades) on the ring is carried out by means of a vacuum, pneumatic or electronic actuator, which in turn is controlled by a turbo-control system. Most modern diesel engines use turbines with VNT technology, which significantly increases the efficiency of the turbocharger. Less often VNT system can be found in gasoline engines, which are more often equipped with Wastegate systems. This is due to the complexity of the design and the insufficient resistance of the VNT mechanisms to high temperatures on gasoline engines.

Bearing Housing is the body of the entire core of the turbocharger and, respectively, the casing of the turbo cartridge (core). The bearing housing is located between the "hot" and "cold" turbocharger housings, between the compressor and the turbine, as if connecting them together. Bearing housings are fitted with plain bearings, thrust bearings, O-rings and bushings. The rotor, assembled from the shaft and wheel and of the compressor wheel, is also mounted in the bearing housing. In the bearing housing, through special channels, engine oil flows from the engine, thereby lubricating all components of the turbocharger. The Bearing Housing is made of a durable powder metal by smelting with subsequent milling.

The Back Plate or closes the compressor, "cold" part of the turbocharger from the inside of it. On one side of the Back Plate is the compressor wheel and compressor housing, on the other side is the bearing housing, and are the turbine wheel and the rest of the "hot" part of the turbocharger. The Back Plate is generally included in the assembled turbo cartridge. Compressor Back Plate is usually made of light aluminum alloys, by a method of smelting.

Core Heat Shield (heat reflector, thermal screen) of the turbo cartridge is sometimes confused with the turbocharger thermal casing. The Heat Shield is located in the "hot" part on the shaft, just behind the turbine wheel and performs the function of reflecting the excess heat created by the hot gas flow. The heat shield (heat reflector) prevents the penetration of excess heat into the bearing housing and further into the "cold" part of the turbocharger. A heat reflector in the form of a disk made of metal alloys of iron or aluminum alloys is produced.

Turbine Housing is a part of the turbocharger in which there is a part of the turbine shaft and wheel. The outer side of the turbine housing covers the bearing housing with the shaft. Also, in the turbine housing with VNT system, there is a nozzle ring of the flow geometry control unit or bypass valve, in the turbochargers with the Wastegate technology. The hull has an inlet into which a hot exhaust gas stream flows and an outlet through which the flow leaves. Some turbine housings are combined with a manifold, the inputs of which are connected directly to the cylinder head through the gasket. The turbine housing is made of heat-resistant materials to withstand the high temperature of the hot exhaust stream from the engine. In the production of heat-resistant casings, alloys of iron with carbon, usually also called cast iron.

The cold part of the turbocharger is enclosed in a light compressor casing (housing). A cold airflow coming from the filter and directing into the engine cylinders through intercooler flows through the compressor housing. In the compressor housing there is a part of the turbine shaft with the compressor wheel, which pumps the air. The compressor housing, as well as the turbine housing, has an inlet and an outlet for the air flow. In the "cold" housing there are technological holes in which pressure sensors are mounted, which measure the level of compression (boost) or openings for connecting air ducts connecting sensors, sensors and other equipment of the turbocharger control system. The compressor housing, which does not require high thermal stability, is made mainly of light aluminum alloys.
